This incredibly handy tool is good to use before trying to get too much done with a brush, because if everything is all tangled up and matted under there, it’s not going to be a very pleasant experience for your cat if you start going in there with a brush.

This tool has rounded edges so you aren’t going to accidentally catch your cat’s skin, but above those rounded edges it’s still very sharp in order to cut through mat and to loosen up any tangled hair before you go in there with the brush we’re about to recommend next.

The FURminator is in a class of it’s own, it’s basically achieved legendary status among anyone who has tried it out. The company that makes it says it can reduce shedding up to 95%, that’s quite a lofty claim but even a smaller improvement is still a very welcome improvement for any cat owners who are looking to reduce the amount of hair they’re living among.

When you get a cat, your home kind of stops being your home, and starts being just a big collection of hair. Hair in the bedroom, hair in the kitchen, hair in the living room…

People invest in expensive pet hair vacuums but as with most things, preventative steps are much more effective! That means catching the hair before it has a chance to end up all over your home. The FURminator helps you get loose cat hair right from the source, before they even have a chance to spread it all over your furniture and clothes.

One of the really annoying aspects about using a “normal” brush for this is trying to get all of the hair out. With the FURminator, there’s this little button you press in, and it helps push all the hair out from in between the teeth instantly.

It’s meant for cats with longer hair, and larger cats in particular, so it might not be great for a small kitten. It’ll still work on smaller cats, but the extra width might make it a bit trickier to maneuver, whereas that extra width makes it a lot easier to brush a larger cat.

These gloves aren’t going to be able to dig deep into your cat’s coat, but they aren’t really meant for that either. These are good for a quick once-over to grab any loose hairs off the surface layer. They’re super convenient, and pets tend to love the massage feel that these gloves produce.

You can take them into the bathtub, and they are made with safe materials. These aren’t unique to long haired cats by any means, but we thought it would still be useful to include them. If your cat is a  bit nervous about being brushed, these can help ease them into it.

This option doesn’t necessarily have the same amount of shine as some of the fancier options on the list, it’s a pretty old-school and basic tool, but it’s unique in that it is able to reach a lot deeper into very long hair. It has longer teeth, and can help prevent mat.

There’s nothing fancy here at all, it’s just simple, gets the job does, and is cheap. It’s not perfect, and we still prefer the FURminator, but for quite a bit less money, something basic is definitely worth taking into consideration, too.

We included this one to show that you don’t always have to go over the top with pet stuff, sometimes basic and simple is just fine. Your pet doesn’t care how much money you spend, as long as they’re getting love (And let’s face it: food.)

Other Things to Think About…

Your long haired cat is going to appreciate the assistance in getting all of that extra hair off of them, especially on a hot day in the summer! They would be coughing up hairballs all day if they tried to get as much hair as a good brushing session can accumulate.

It’s a good idea to start slower and gentle, this is where the gloves can be useful. If your cat isn’t used to this, they may not love it at first, but just be calm and ease them into it.

Questions and Answers:

Will brushing my cat reduce shedding?

So here’s the thing, you can’t stop your cat from shedding their hair, it’s going to come off of them, but what you can do is catch it before it hits the floor, your carpet, your bed, your favorite sweater, and so on. Your cat is still going to shed, but you can brush them to catch it before it leaves their body, essentially.

PetAssure says (source): “Shedding in cats can be controlled with frequent brushing and combing. Daily brushing and combing removes loose and dead hair and helps keep a cat’s skin and coat healthy. Cats with healthy fur coats who are groomed regularly do tend to shed a bit less.

Why does my cat hate brushing?

This little munchkin might not have the longest hair, but a lot of these brushes are versatile enough to work, and the others ones usually have a version for shorter hair cats.

Some cats warm up to the idea of being brushed a lot more easily than others, some love it right away, others are not very fond.

It’s very important to not traumatize them to the idea of being brushed by going in too strong or aggressively, here’s a a piece of advice from the site LoveMeow (source):

Slowly brush your way down to the side. Your cat may walk away as you brush. Pause when she is knowingly annoyed and wants to leave. Go back to petting immediately and tell your cat “Good job” for what she just did. Once your cat has calmed down, introduce the brush again and go very slowly and gently with brushing. Every time your cat tolerates a stroke, reward her by petting and saying “Good job! Good girl!”

Why is my cats hair suddenly matting?

A sudden increase in matting can be a sign that your cat isn’t properly grooming themselves. It can mean that they’re suffering some type of oral issue, as that’s their main grooming tool, or even an issue with their spine that prevents them from having a full range of motion.

The Aldergrove Animal Clinic discusses the aforementioned causes, and the following (source): “General malaise (not feeling well) will make your cat sleep more and not have enough energy to be bothered about grooming. So matting of the fur may be your first indicator that your pet is anemic, isn’t breathing well, has kidney failure, is diabetic, has heart disease or even cancer. It is your cat’s way of showing you he/she isn’t feeling well.

It could also just mean your cat needs a little help grooming themselves, and a good brush every day or two can help drastically reduce the amount of hair that falls off your cat’s coat.
